Baconton Charter head baseball coach dies

Baconton Charter School first-year baseball coach Devyn Newberry was taken off life support Sunday morning after his organs were harvested for donation after he was injured in a car wreck on Dec. 11, according to WALB out of Albany.

The popular coach was succeeding longtime Baconton Charter head baseball coach Bubber Birdsong, who resigned last summer to return home to Alabama. Newberry played baseball at Thomas County Central and Georgia Southwestern. He was 27.

Newberry was injured in a car crash, then had to be airlifted to Tallahassee (Fla.) where he was in critical condition and was fighting for his life. He passed away during the early morning hours of Dec. 15.

Baconton Charter School is located in northern Mitchell County in Southwest Georgia and competes in Region 1-1A.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Thomasville First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in New Bethel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Thomasville First Baptist Church.
