Porter records 500th coaching victory

Valdosta High School baseball coach Brad Porter became the fourth coach this year to reach the 500-victory coaching plateau after a pair of wins Thursday night. The longtime coach recorded at pair of victories at Lake Point Sports in Emerson, Ga. to join the exclusive coaching club.

Porter thought it would be a few years before he reached the mark. But after closer review, he realized that he went 52-22 at Madison County (Fla.) earlier in his career and didn't count those victories in his win totals. His 4-3 victory over North Paulding gave him win No. 500. Then a 17-4 rout of Woodland (Bartow) later that night gave him his 501st career coaching victory.

Porter joins Marist's Mike Strickland, Mill Creek's Doug Jones and Parkview's Chan Brown to reach 500-career coaching victories this year. He is the 39th coach in state history to record 500 or more wins.

A coach of high-character and faith, Porter was awarded the Ethics in Coaching award by the Georgia Dugout Club in 2018. He said building relationships and mentoring athletes mean more than coaching victories.

"My trophy has always been what they become after they come out of my program," Porter said.

After Thursday night's victories, his career mark stands at 501-242

In addition to coaching at Valdosta and Madison, Fla., he has been a head baseball coach at Tiftarea Academy, Coffee and Atkinson County.
