McDonald honored by Braves as HomeTown Hero

The Atlanta Braves recognized legendary Georgia High School baseball coach David McDonald May 31 as part of its HomeTown Hero Celebration.

McDonald, a longtime coach at Wheeler High School in Cobb County, is currently an assistant at The Lovett School.

Before a distinguished baseball coaching career which landed him in the National High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame, the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Wheeler Athletic Hall of Fame, McDonald served in the Vietnam War.

In March 1995, President Bill Clinton presented the Bronze Star with “V” (Valor) and the Purple Heart to McDonald at an awards ceremony in Marietta.

"I'm appreciative more now than when I was younger," McDonald said. "The number of Vietnam veterans is declining every year. I'm really appreciative and grateful to the Atlanta Braves for the opportunity."
